Wedding Registry Alternatives

By Emily Capdevielle

Creating a wedding registry can be a very daunting task. It’s important to really be organized and not go all scanner-happy when you visit each store you have on the registry list. It is important to sit down with your significant other to decide what items are must-haves or any upgrades you may need for certain things if you have already been living together for some time. While you may have your heart set on a top-of-the-line espresso maker, you may find that you already have many things that typically go on a wedding registry. If so, do not fret! There are plenty of options to receive things that may help out with other expenses as you and your loved one start your lives together.

Charity Registry- Creating a charity registry is a great alternative if you have most or all of the items that would usually leave a couple scanning away for hours at their local Crate & Barrel. If there is a particular cause or charity that is close to your heart, you can create an online registry on your wedding website for example, so your guests can make contributions. You can always add a charity to your registry list as well if you still need some household items. If you do not have a wedding website, websites including The Knot or Crowdrise are great places to start raising money for the charity of your choice.

Honeymoon Registry- If you and your loved one already have your home stocked full of appliances and kitchenware, why not ask for funds where you could use some extra green? Depending on where you are going for your honeymoon, activities and places to stay may not exactly be cheap. While giving a gift is never supposed to be an expectation, you can always let your bridal party know that “hey, we could really use some extra cash or funding for our backpacking trip throughout Europe!” There are plenty of websites to choose from to create a honeymoon registry so your guests can contribute to your hotel stay, activities nearby, airfare or even dining expenses! For some, it may be more appealing to stay an extra night in paradise than having a new blender with an extra setting.

Wedding Contributions- As you may have already found out, throwing a huge wedding extravaganza is pricey and you may have already considered running off to Vegas to elope rather than spending so much money on one day.  However, lets face it, your Nana is never going to forgive you if you say “I do” without her being there. You would be surprised how many connections come out of the woodwork when you announce your engagement if they haven’t already. Your second cousin may be an aspiring DJ or a family or friend may have connections to cover other costs from flowers to discounts on a possible venue that may cut costs. They may offer to pitch in for certain things for the wedding and that may serve as their wedding gift to you. If you are having a destination wedding, it is typical to expect that their wedding gift is simply being there after having to purchase airfare and any other accommodations.
